You know you're getting old, Becca thought, when your child stays up later than you on Christmas Eve. Becca had been longing to go to bed, but felt she had to wait until Lily had settled down before creeping in with her Christmas stocking, bulging with a wide selection of goodies. Martin always said she overdid it on the Christmas present front, and she supposed she did. But Lily was her only child, and Christmas was a time of indulgence.
She had to tread carefully across the room trying to avoid discarded clothes, books, make-up, whatever. Lily's body was a mound of duvet topped by a spray of jet-black hair just peeping over the edge of the duvet cover. My darling girl, Becca thought, as she placed the stocking over the edge.
'I know it's you,' came a little voice from the duvet. 'There's no need to creep around.'
'It's Mother Christmas,' Becca whispered. She put the huge teddy bear she'd won at the Christmas market next to the stocking and hoped Lily would christen it something other than Evangeline. 'Go to sleep.'
'Love you,' Lily murmured.
Becca touched the sleeping mound. 'Love you.'
As she crept back into bed and snuggled against Martin's warm and sleeping back she wondered if Paul was doing the same. His children were younger, so his creeping would have been earlier in the evening, leaving him and Suzy free.
She hadn't really thought about Suzy much, but now, cuddling up to Martin, she wondered about her. She was obviously good at her job, good at everything in fact. Becca wondered what she'd be like on holiday, where all she had to do was be happy and carefree. Were she and Paul making love right now? The thought made Becca feel sick. She didn't want to think about it but she made herself.
This was the reality. Paul was probably making love to Suzy even as Becca lay in bed with Martin. The best she could hope for was he was thinking about Becca. Martin's back was warm and soft. She nuzzled against him, his smell as familiar as her own, all the while thinking about Suzy. She was Paul's wife, and though he didn't speak of her with much affection, he must have loved her once. Perhaps he still did. Perhaps Becca was nothing more than an amusement, an escape from reality, an excursion into a fantasy world. It was clear that Suzy was the breadwinner. Perhaps he didn't like that, and his relationship with Becca was more about getting his own back on Suzy than any deep affection.
Becca twisted over into a foetal position, wanting sleep. Oblivion was far more attractive than thinking about Suzy and Paul. He's a man married to a highly competent, highly intelligent alpha female. Perhaps his way of dealing with that was flirtation. Perhaps Becca was just another flirtation in a long line of flirtations.
Despite the warmth of Martin's body she felt cold all over, thinking about the escapade in the car. She had
